Synopsis: A road trip to a wedding pushes a dysfunctional family to the brink after their journey descends into a claustrophobic hallucinatory nightmare. THE MöBIUS TRIP is a darkly intimate and surreal portrayal of a chaotic family unit, confined in their car and fated in their familial roles.
About the Filmmaker: Simone Smith is a self-taught filmmaker from Glasgow and a Screen International Rising Star. She has written and directed short films which fuse pure cinema with authentic experience, translating her experience of living in the world into form. Independently made on zero to low budgets, her films have been described as “surreal poetry”, and “raw and unconventional” by BFI Sight and Sound, and screened at multiple Oscar, Bafta and Bifa qualifying festivals.
Her independent short film SLAP was nominated for a BAFTA in 2019, and her debut short film RED earned her the Best Editor accolade at the 2013 BAFTA New Talent Awards. Simone’s latest BFI-Network funded short film THE MöBIUS TRIP premiered at the Glasgow Short Film Festival in 2023, and won the Jury Special Mention award for its “radicalism”, and “strong adventurous cinematic vision”. Since then, it has gone on to win 13 awards and screen at 50+ festivals worldwide, including the Academy-qualifying Hollyshorts Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Encounters, Beyond Fest, and Interfilm Berlin. It recently won the Grand Jury Award at the Chicago Underground Film Festival, the longest-running underground film festival in the world, and made the prestigious BIFA-longlist for Best British Short Film.
Simone is developing three feature films and has secured a development deal with Screen Scotland/BFI Network for her debut.
