Synopsis: Nome (Afi Okaidja), an introverted teenager, has grown up on an isolated smallholding with her parents, Ellis (Ony Uhiara) and Ismael (Kwame Bentil). Her only friend is a Worm. However, today is the day when their world starts to crumble.
Nome & The Worm is a heartfelt, grounded, magical realist coming-of-age tale about a girl coming to grips with her mother leaving, and the lengths she’ll go to to stop it.
About the Filmmaker: Lydia Rui tells personal stories through a cross-cultural lens. She is currently undertaking her MFA of Directing Fiction at the National Film & Television School, UK through an Ian Potter Cultural Trust and Screen Australia Enterprise fellowship. In 2013-14, she travelled through North America and Europe as the videographer for Beyoncé’s Mrs. Carter World Tour. Her short documentary, This is Yarra (2018), premiered at DOC NYC and is currently on Topic. Her narrative short, This Perfect Day (2018), World Premiered at Tribeca Film Festival 2019 and received a Vimeo Staff Pick. Both her short films have been nominated for Australian Directors Guild Awards in their respective categories. In 2020, she won the 29th Flickerfest International Short Film Festival Emerging Female Filmmaker Award. Prom Night (2020), her experimental student short, will screen at the 69th Melbourne International Film Festival.
