About the Filmmaker: Sophie Black graduated from the University of Creative Arts in 2010 before going on to work in the art department of numerous independent shorts and features, which gave her a strong eye for design and colours on film. She then founded the production company, Triskelle Pictures Ltd., producing the short film ‘Stop/Eject’ (which premiered at Raindance in 2014 before being long-listed for Best British Short Film at the BAFTAs in 2015), among others.
As a director, Sophie has created nine short films, including ‘Night Owls’ (which premiered at LSFF in 2016 before winning 17 awards at smaller festivals across the world), ‘Songbird’ (shortlisted for iShorts funding and starring The X Factor’s Janet Devlin), and the BFI NETWORK-Funded ‘A Different Place’. Out of her numerous accolades as a director, some of Sophie’s key achievements include being accepted for the BFI NETWORK x BAFTA crew scheme in both 2018 & 2019, and winning the MMBF Rising Star Award in 2017. She is also a member of Directors UK.
In her rare spare time, Sophie is also a keen writer. She co-wrote the aforementioned ‘Night Owls’, and wrote the LGBT drama film ‘Hidden’ for director Jess O’Brien, which screened at the OSCAR-qualifying Seattle International Film Festival. She has contributed articles to The BFI NETWORK and Clothes on Film, to name just two, and one such article was featured by Entertainment Weekly in 2013.
