Synopsis: Roya, a British-Muslim woman, grieves after her mother’s death. After the funeral, she returns to a home which feels emptier than it once did, and discovers that her relationship with another woman wasn’t as concealed as she thought. Plunged into despair and burdened by things left unsaid, Roya is forced to face up to her true desires. She must also manage her relationship with her brother, who is navigating grief in his own way.
About the Director: Poonam Brah is an established theatre director, who has directed plays for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her plays have performed to critical acclaim at the National Theatre, the Royal Court, the Young Vic and the Soho Theatre. Poonam’s new passion is to transfer her directing skills from the stage to the screen. Home Girl is her third short film, and was created as part of Film London’s ‘London Calling’ slate in 2018.
