By Fin McMorran
2012 One Minute Movie
This started as a personal obsession with sheds (dating from approximately age 8, and traceable through a series of works involving sculptural sheds, walking shed performances, painting on sheds). Recently, through a series of conversations with other women, I identified some common interests, dreams and obsessions.
Sheds are often regarded as men’s spaces. This film explores women’s relationships with their sheds. It is a compilation of stories collected from women in the north east, about their sheds, what they do in or with them, and their feelings towards them as private and special spaces, representing “a room of one’s own”. The animation works alongside but does not simply illustrate these stories. The series is part of an ongoing area of practice which investigates and develops the computer as a painting medium, and how that painting can then be animated.
About the director
Fin McMorran had an eclectic art education at Corsham, Sheffield and Northumbria. From 1985 to 2002 she worked chiefly as a painter, with occasional lapses into installation and sheds, and an interest in narrative. After studying an MSc in Multimedia she became interested in computer-based artworks, and in developing her existing practice into interactive painting, a study that developed into a practice-based PhD. After spending 5 years animating and coding paintings, it was a relief to drop the interactive and concentrate on the animated. This coincided with a move to the Media department at Teesside, where conversations about narrative arc and camera angles became everyday… and inspiring. Since 2007 she has been working entirely in animation drawing/ painting the images by hand using a graphics tablet and pen. As an artist-filmmaker, she usually works as a one-woman-band, but is currently collaborating with Media colleague Paul Baldwin on an animated fiction involving spiders, nostril hair and an underground shed .
