The 2019 Norwich Film Festival is proud to announce its diverse and engaging line-up of 111 short films in competition for its 9th edition. The selection represents some of the most exciting narrative, documentary and animated filmmaking around.
This year’s shorts programme includes an outstanding selection of regional, national and international films, curated from a record 812 submissions, with female filmmakers directing 44% of the selection.
The Official Selection continues to celebrate and embrace international storytelling, with 31% of its films representing 18 countries including Australia, Algeria, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Czech Republic, Estonia, Egypt, France, Germany, Ireland, India, Japan, Nepal, Portugal, Sweden, and the United States.
The short films will be presented over 7 days and 15 screenings. These events will include Women In Filmmaking Shorts, Comedy Shorts, Experimental Shorts, Global Issues Shorts, World Cinema Shorts, LGBT Shorts, Animated Shorts, Documentary Shorts, Emerging Filmmakers, the East Anglian Collection, and 4 Mix Tapes (which will screen a variety of live action and animated films). Tickets for these events will be available from the 16th September 2019.
Craig Higgins, consultant at the festival noted that, “The Norwich Film Festival has continued to attract some of the best short films on the festival circuit and we are beyond excited to screen these shorts to our wonderful audiences in Norwich this November. As a team, we work incredibly hard each year to select the highest standard of shorts which feature stories around humanity, community, relationships, friendships and identity. There will also be a good selection of comedy films to make our audiences chuckle”.
This year’s Official Selection features notable actors also from the world of Film & TV including Timothy Spall, Anna Friel, Russell Tovey, Whoopi Goldberg, James Cosmo, Paul Kaye, Mark Benton, Olivia Colman, and Lorraine Ashbourne.
The Norwich Film Festival hosts 5 competitive categories including; Narrative Short, Animated Short, Documentary Short, Student Short and East Anglian Short. There is also a One Minute Film category. For the full list of this year’s selection please visit here.

The 2019 Norwich Film Festival takes place from 6th to the 17th November. Tickets for the shorts screening will be available from the 16th September 2019.
