Mother may know best, but in a case of mistaken identity, a mother’s love may do more harm than good, especially if her child is not even of her species.
In Grub, we meet a fly who tries desperately to feed a larva she is convinced is her own. She eventually succeeds while remaining blissfully unaware of the tragedy that is about to unfold…
Judges’ comments
Very different from the others. Strange, dark story of insect life with echoes of Tim Burton. About insects, but also about mothers and children and oddly moving. – Tim McInnerny
I felt this shows a massive range of emotions in a really simple way, and pulls in the viewer using the stop motion animation technique. I appreciate how much work has gone into making this short, but like its level of minimalism too. – Bernard Hill
Knowing how much work goes into stop-motion, this is an impressive feat. A faster pace or some more judicious editing might have helped, but otherwise a strong idea, neatly executed. – Jim Field Smith
Dark and rather sad stop frame animated short. This was a rather depressing vignette told through the actions of the fly / grub…….I felt it too slow but still a rather touching watch – and certainly stood out stylistically from the rest of the category. – Steve Furst
