Nominated 2012 – Best Short Film
Dual is a split-screen short film which takes place whilst London, and specifically its financial institutions, are trapped in the throes of terrorist attacks. The top half of the screen focuses on a Bomb Disposal Technician working on a bomb, whilst in the bottom half a woman goes into labour in the cafeteria of the financial institution where she works. Her only aid is a workman who seems overly nervous and agitated.
The two halves are intertwined, contrasting and complementing each other in character, plot, themes and visual style – each will aid in taking our audience on a journey that twists and turns.
Judges’ comments
Brilliant use throughout of a spit screen creates tremendous tension and adds a layer of psychological complexity. Literally a story of life and death, I defy anyone to stop watching this. Really well shot and edited. – Tim McInnerny
A simple idea, neatly executed. Technically impressive and well shot – however it was a little over-long to sustain the idea, and perhaps the split-screen device could have been used to more subversive effect. – Jim Field Smith
