By Sue Elliott
Nominated 2012 – Best Student Film
Formby Patterson-Wright had one of the most recognisable faces in the country. His career spanned over four decades and his work can still be seen on road signs, construction sites and public buildings today. This film offers a brief insight into the life and work of one of the safest men who ever lived.
About the director
“With Remembering Formby I wanted to make a film that looked at health and safety signage from a unique perspective. It is a satire, but I also wanted to celebrate this graphic design aesthetic because it is so much a part of our environment, for better or worse.”
Sue Elliott is an independent animator working in the South-West of England. Her interests are varied and include music, information graphics and improvisation. She has recently completed an MA in Animation at UWE.

Judges’ comments
A brilliant concept with a very clever narration. Genuinely innovative, witty and sharp. – Tim McInnerny
A lovely idea and the use of documentary style narrative voiceover was interesting if not always successful. Some very funny moments and nice details in the animation. – Jim Field Smith
This is a VERY close second for my vote for Best Student Film. Wonderful simple use of interview and animated captions. Absolutely engrossing and utterly charming. It appealed to my love of the obscure…. an inspired idea. – Steve Furst
